Managing Emotions

I feel so much, so fast… how do I handle this better?

Do you find it difficult to manage the intensity of your emotions in the moment, leading to explosions of anger, despair, or frustration? Have you been told you’re “too sensitive”? Do you struggle to cope with situations that others seem to take in stride?

Many people struggle with managing their feelings, and all too often they are left with a deep sense of shame, helplessness, or loneliness. Past relationships may have been invalidating or traumatic, with few instances of feeling seen or heard.

How can therapy for emotional overwhelm help?

First, you are not alone in this. Many people find having somewhere safe to work through their feelings gives them some breathing room to start making sense of what’s happening and how to find some relief. In session, we may use DBT therapy to learn how to take care of yourself when you’re upset or overwhelmed, Internal Family Systems and parts work to understand what is driving the feelings, or psychodynamic, and/or self-compassion based approaches to develop a deeper understanding of who you are, explore what you need to feel safe, and discover together how to make the changes you want to see in your daily life and relationships. Whichever approach fits best for you, one thing remains true - all emotions are welcomed here, with curiosity and acceptance.
